While there many types of Bank, they generally fall into one of three main categories, Retail, Commercial, and Investment Banks:

Retail Bank:

Most people are familiar with retail banks, as they are aimed primarily at us, the consumers. Retail banking can mostly be thought of as everyday banking, including other financial services. Aside from having basic banking services, retail banks provide financial advice which usually leads onto the offer of personal loans and mortgages.

Commercial Bank:

A commercial bank is a financial institution that provides services such as accepting deposits, making business loans, and offering basic investment products. Both retail and commercial banks can generally be found under the same roof but the commercial banks focus is more around deposits and loan services for corporations or large/middle-sized businesses.

Investment & Personal Bank:

Investment & personal banks live to serve large organisations, institutions and high net worth individuals. They serve them by helping manage complex financial tasks, some of which include raising capital and the facilitation of corporate mergers & acquisitions.

Finance companies are organisation that provide personal (Consumer Finance) and business (Commercial Finance) loans. These companies differ from banks in that they don’t deal in cash sums from their clients, it is all based around terms of credit.

They make their money from the interest rates charged on the credit agreements between them and their clients. Traditionally these fees are higher than banks but access to funds is a lot easier than it is with banks.


Overall, businesses exist to make a profit and no matter if it is a small, medium, or large-sized business, they all need financial experts on their side to ensure that the company accounts all add up. Accountants constantly monitor and manage company cash flows, expenditures, profits, and/or losses.

Accountants are as much advisors as they are financial custodians of a business. They often find themselves providing and explaining financial information to business owners or the C-suite.
